Tigre Resistivity Imaging

Resistivity

Resistivity has played a part in geophysics for many years, and is an established and fundamental technique towards understanding the earth’s makeup. Traditional methods of resistivity sounding employed the Wenner or Schlumberger techniques, however resistivity has in recent years seen a radical change to deployment methods, and applications.

With the introduction in the late 1980’s of the resistivity imaging technique, a number of electrodes (initially 25) would be addressed, alternating from current to potential electrode by way of a computer program. The use of such a program allows for a large number of electrodes to be sequenced in differing order and with varying spacing thus offering automation of the entire operation. The result of such automation is to produce pseudo-sections of the ground below the electrodes of apparent resistivity, and with a suitable inversion program such as RES2DINV or RES3DINV, applied resistivity values are obtained.

Tigre Resistivity Imaging Meter

The Tigre resistivity meter in 32, 64 and 128 electrode configurations. Due to the designed to the Tigre, expansion is straightforward, and offers the customer improved productivity and resolution as more electrodes are deployed per spread.

Imagerpro, a windows acquisition program allows real time colour pseudo-sections to be generated on the laptop computer used to collect and store data. Such real time presentation offers instant confirmation of data quality without the need to apply inversion software.

The Tigre is a single box instrument which contains the required electronics for up to 128 electrode switching. Internal batteries and booster option are also enclosed in this instrument case, thus ensuring minimal equipment is required to run an imaging survey.

Should it be required, the Tigre can be run from an external 12v DC source, such as a car battery. Charging, RS232 port and external power ports are all front panel connections.

With the introduction of larger systems employing greater numbers of electrodes, much longer profiles can be obtained. We offer the Tigre systems, which can deploy up to 128 electrodes from a single instrument, which offers the user long profile options and increased resolution at depth.

The resulting benefit of such imaging has offered a further dimension in understanding the often-complex make-up of ground conditions. Applications include:

  • Detection of contamination plumes
  • Cavity detection
  • Leachate studies
  • Landfill boundary mapping
  • Locating fracture zones
  • Groundwater exploration
  • Environmental site studies
  • Archaeology
  • Geotechnical investigations
